The European Union was originally created by two enemies, who decided to reconcile and build a trading cooperation. That is the reason why they first created a cooperation of the steal and coal industries in 1950, right after WWII. They understood that the best way to be at peace with one another was to create some sort of trading relation between them. The EU member countries will never fight against each other because EU is like one big country.
E.U. citizens are allowed to travel and work anywhere they want in the EU. Businesses can expand to other countries much more easily and have a broader selection of talented workers to choose from. A French company who wants to expand to Spain can easily find and hire a Spanish worker to come and work in France. It is good also good for EU workers because they can have much more job opportunities. Students can also go study in other countries much more easily.
In the EU, it is very easy for businesses to expand their activity to other countries because there are practically no trade barriers between them. The UE wanted to minimize the taxes and restrictions to make it easier for EU businesses to expand and trade with one another. The EU is basically one large free and open market.
