The purpose of this review is to define the physiologic?l indices of sports perform?nce, ex?mine psychologic?l f?ctors involved with sports, ?nd suggest ?ltern?tives for co?ches to ?void sports perform?nce f?ilures. The body of liter?ture which ?ddresses sports perform?nce is prim?rily physiologic?l. F?ctors involved with sports perform?nce ?re p?r?symp?thetic ?nd symp?thetic system ch?nges. Sports perform?nce c?n be improved by providing ? cle?r system of rew?rds ?nd scheduling, const?nt ?ttention to re?listic tr?ining schedules, implementing psychologic?l testing, ?nd monitoring a diet?ry int?ke c?n ?llevi?te the potenti?l for burnout. This paper includes discussion of two articles on the effect of psychological factors on the performance of sportsmen. Additionally, it includes recommendations as to how to deal with these paychological factors.
Psychologic?l f?ctors ?ssoci?ted with sport perform?nce can influence a sportsmen in both a positive and a negative way. Some positive factors that significantly enhance the performance of athletes are for example, segmenting, task-relevant thought content, positive self-talk, and mood words. The most common negative factor that influences sports performance is anxiety. Anxiety is a body's automatic response that prepares it to ?fight' or ?flee' from perceived harm or attack that ensures survival of the human species. Sporting competition is an event that creates the feeling of anxiety. Basically, when the demands of training or competition exceeds one's perceived ability, anxiety is the inevitable outcome. I will review all these factors and propose my responce as a coach to the psychological factors that influence sports peroformance.
