Definition of the Advanced Placement Exams and main objectives

It is a school program that was created in 1950 by an organization. The main objective is to ensure that high school students can integrate courses at the university from high school in order to prepare them for teaching. The fields represented are varied, there is literature, but also math or history, a non-exhaustive list.

When Advanced Placement (AP) courses are completed, they can take an official exam and thus earn credits for their future university entry.

Depending on the fields and institutions, these credits can be valid in several countries, such as the United States, but also Canada or even Europe.

The general functioning of the AP Exam

In high school, AP courses remain optional, they just represent a help for high school students and their projects, because they are very valued. They are taught by professors who follow a strict program; program put forward by the College Board, which is the one that invented the AP Exams.

These exams take place every year in May.

There are several subjects available:

AP biology, calculus AB and BC, English Language and Composition, but also AP US History, AP French Language and Culture, AP Psychology, and AP Computer Science Principles.

Explanation of the AP Exams scoring system

Contrary to what can be found in the scoring of "traditional" exams, AP Exams are scored on a scale of 1 to 5.

This system is in no way similar to a score that would be issued out of 10 or 20 or even a percentage. It is not a question here of noting correct answers to an exercise but of delimiting and evaluating the level of mastery of a particular subject.

The highest score that the student can obtain is 5, whose meaning is "extremely well qualified", so the grade is excellent.

Then comes the 4th, "well qualified", the evaluated level is then very good.

The 3 "Qualified", satisfactory level, which corresponds more or less to the average for example.

The 2 " Possibly qualified", the result is too low, so it will not be recognized by a large majority of institutions.

Finally, the 1 "No recommendation", the score is clearly insufficient.

As we have just seen, the 3 often matches to a kind of average. From this grade to grade 5, it is therefore a success but it must be kept in mind that universities often prefer a better grade, 4 and 5 being clearly privileged.

The course of the exam

Each exam is different depending on the subject chosen by the student.

We will see, however, that most are composed of two main parts. The first part is the multiple choice questionnaire, which is automatically graded. The second is in the form of open-aswer questions, which are graded by proofreaders.

The score that will be delivered at the end, the one between 1 and 5, is based on an algorithm that is focused on the results obtained by the student in each of the two sections.

How to rate a good grade on an AP Exam?

Is a 4 on AP exam good?

Is a 3 good on ap exam?

As we said above, a score between 3 and 5 is generally considered a good grade.

3 out of 5 is a score that can be accepted by some universities for certain types of subjects only, because some are more demanding and will ask for a 4 or a 5 out of 5.

The problem is the competitive side, because universities and/or schools usually receive many applications and take only the best. In this perspective, a 4 out of 5 is the score considered minimum to increase this competitiveness. This score indicates that the student has a good mastery of the chosen subjects.

The 5 out of 5 rating is of course the best, it means excellence in a field and opens access to the most prestigious and most demanded universities, such as Harvard or Yale.

For students, a score of 3 out of 5 makes it possible to validate a subject in public institutions.

It should also be noted that there are European and even French institutions that take into account AP Exams when the student comes from an international high school. When the student gets an excellent score, 5 out of 5, it can allow him to skip a semester.

How to pass the AP Exams?

To pass this type of exam, it is important to work throughout the year and with official resources, such as AP Classroom, which offers both courses and exercises. Students must set a review schedule and use specialized books.

Working with other students also increases their chances of success. This makes it possible to share knowledge, and to maintain optimal motivation until the end of the exams.

We must not forget that in a competitive world like the one we live in, passing the AP exams can be a real benefit in university admission.

The file is thus valued, as we said above. Indeed, in American universities, admissions take into account both academic results, but also extracurricular activities, not counting the cover letter, etc. Courses taken during high school and levels of difficulty are also taken into account.

In addition, by obtaining credit in advance, the student can have his diploma earlier and have a more flexible schedule.

Conclusion

The AP exams therefore represent a real opportunity for students who wish to join a prestigious university, or who wish to get ahead of a specific program.

These exams are very popular with students in the United States, because they represent a real appreciation at the academic level and can be a way to save time and even save on tuition fees.

However, these exams remain difficult, and you have to be rigorous and organized in order to best prepare for them to optimize your chances of success.
