The core-peripheral framework states that countries located in the periphery are dominated by North America, Western Europe and Japan. However, during the period of colonization, Europe was the core region whereas most other parts of world were the periphery regions. The case of Vietnam is interesting given the current history of the country and its past. Vietnam used to be a colony of France (part of the French Indochina) until the Vietnamese opted to be independent through hard fought battles.
