China has been able to feed its people inspite of having 22 percent of the world's population, and with less than 10 percent of the world's cultivated land. For over 2 decades, China's economy has demonstrated vigour and vitality with an annual average growth rate of 9.7%. China has become one of the countries that is experiencing the highest economic growth rate in the world. By the year 2000, China's GDP reached more than 8.94 trillion yuan, exceeding US $1 trillion for the first time. In accordance with the rankings arranged by the World Bank, China's economic status in 2001 was placed sixth behind the United States, Japan, Germany, France and Great Britain.
