Research project examining the territorial dynamics and attractiveness of ATP Challenger and Futures tennis tournaments in France, focusing on their economic and social impacts.
[...] The sporting competitions attract a diverse public with social and cultural logics. The spectators do not attend the sports events solely for the sporting aspect but also to live a collective experience and affirm their identity affiliations. There are three types of spectators: the 'passionate supporters' who express their identity in sports and identify with an athlete, a team. [...] A comparison between the ITF and Challengers is necessary. - Are temporary jobs created, notably in the restaurant or logistics sector. - Estimate the return on investment for local authorities in terms of local development. - Do local merchants experience increased foot traffic during and after the tournament, and what is the short and long-term impact. - Who are the partners, what are the subsidies, why do cities choose such or such partner. Impact social : - In these tournaments, there must be ball pickers, volunteers because often it is a tennis club that organizes the tournament. [...]
[...] The way to understand how these tournaments work would be to follow the evolution of an ATP Challenger or Futures tournament over two years. A comparison with other tournaments of the same caliber would be desirable to know if the economic and social contributions are different. The comparison would preferably be with a country similar to France in terms of tennis (infrastructure, tennis culture) such as Spain or Italy. It would be interesting to determine how waste is managed, study the environmental impact of player and public transportation, and what the cost is for local authorities.
