This document discusses Chile's energy transition towards carbon neutrality by 2050, its socio-economic impacts, and necessary adaptation strategies for local communities and traditional industries.
[...] Building on these fundamental principles, Chile can overcome the challenges of the energy revolution while ensuring a prosperous future for all. Ambitious public policies, targeted investments, and close collaboration among different stakeholders will enable navigating this complex transition to a low-carbon, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable economy. Based on my research, I can propose some suggestions to best address this question. Promoting new sources of income independent of fossil fuels, such as sustainable tourism, organic agriculture, or local craftsmanship could facilitate the local economy context. [...]
[...] Fourthly, fostering collaboration among stakeholders is essential. A just and inclusive energy transition requires close collaboration among the various stakeholders involved. The creation of dialogue and collaboration platforms can facilitate the coordination of efforts and the search for common solutions. Fifthly, clear and consistent public policies are necessary. Clear and consistent public policies in the field of renewable energy and energy transition are essential to guide investments and decision-making by economic actors. This involves setting ambitious renewable energy targets, establishing stable regulatory frameworks, and providing clear price signals. [...]
[...] Dissertation: The Chilean Energy Revolution: What Adaptation Strategies for Local Communities and Traditional Industries? Chile is at a critical juncture in its energy history, resolutely embarking on an ambitious transition aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050 (INTERNATIONAL MONETARY FUND. WESTERN HEMISPHERE DEPT This transformation, although necessary to combat climate change and ensure environmental sustainability, raises legitimate concerns about its socio-economic impacts on local communities and traditional industries. The adoption of the historic 2023 law on renewable energies (LOI N° fixing ambitious targets for 100% renewable electricity production and a 95% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, demonstrates the Chilean government's political will to break free from its dependence on fossil fuels. [...] A clear regulatory framework enables traditional industries to anticipate changes and plan their transition effectively. This involves setting ambitious but realistic greenhouse gas emission reduction targets, establishing strict environmental standards, and implementing transparent and efficient authorization procedures. Also, the carbon angle of attack involves setting a price on greenhouse gas emissions, thereby internalizing environmental costs into the prices of goods and services. Companies are thus encouraged to reduce their emissions to minimize their carbon-related expenses. (HEPBURN & AL., 2015). Carbon pricing can generate significant tax revenues that can be reinvested in the energy transition and environmental protection. [...]
