Emergency was founded by Gino Strada, an Italian doctor, with the help of other colleagues. At the beginning of its activities, Emergency promoted a campaign against anti-personnel landmines which brought Italy to ban them. In 1996, Emergency opened it's first hospital in Iraq. In 2001, shortly before the war in Afghanistan, Emergency took a stand against the war and in September 2002, together with other organizations, Emergency launched a huge campaign to prevent Italy from taking part in the war against Iraq.
