This study was conducted in four governmental secondary schools located in Nefas Silk lafto sub-city. The passing rate of governmental schools found in Nefas Silk Lafto sub-city in 2024 was 7.03%, indicating an extremely low passing rate of students at the sub-city level. The academic preparation of grade 12 students on their achievement was not studied in detail. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to assess the academic preparation of grade 12 students for the national exams. A descriptive research design approach was used. Both qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection were applied. Two hundred and five students were participated in this study. Stratified and random sampling were used to select students in order to collect data using a questionnaire. Statistical software for social sciences (SPSS, version 22) was used to analyse the data. Most grade 12 students (79%) were set a goal (plan) to achieve the national examination. About 67.3% of grade 12 students did not take study skill training. About 81.5% of grade 12 students did not use time for study at school (lunch time). 45.4 % of students used the library, while 54.6% did not use the library. About 72% of grade 12 students took textbooks by standard (1:1 ration). About 51% of students did not attend the tutorial class. Most of the students (74.1%) used their smartphones for non-education purposes. 71.7% of students did not start working matric questions in the month of March. Most students (87%) selected hardy copy exam delivery for their national examination. Finally, the findings of the research showed that there was low academic preparation of students that finally resulted in low passing rates of the students on their national examination.
