Exploring the significance of national anthems in shaping a country's collective memory and identity, using the examples of the French and American anthems.

However, today, they can be considered as "old-fashioned", essentially because the lyrics refer to the past. Using the examples of the French and American anthems, I will show that even if these anthems may sound disconnected from today's life, they are essential for the collective memory of any country. If we consider the American anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner" (1812) mentionsthe rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air In a way, the implicit message delivered by both anthems is: we are strong people and we are able to defend our country no matter how difficult it may be. Even if this may sound outdated, to me, these historical moments shaped a country's identity and must be remembered for the centuries to come. [...]
