Exploring the significance of national anthems in shaping a country's collective memory and identity, using the examples of the French and American anthems.

[...] National anthems: a thing of the past? National anthems have always been part of a country's identity. However, today, they can be considered as "old-fashioned", essentially because the lyrics refer to the past. Using the examples of the French and American anthems, I will show that even if these anthems may sound disconnected from today's life, they are essential for the collective memory of any country. [...] Moreover, the chorus ordering citizens to "form a battalion" implies a war climate which is quite negative, especially in a global context where powerful nations are using the nuclear threat. If we consider the American anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner" (1812) mentionsthe rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air In a way, the implicit message delivered by both anthems is: we are strong people and we are able to defend our country no matter how difficult it may be. Even if this may sound outdated, to me, these historical moments shaped a country's identity and must be remembered for the centuries to come. [...]
