The United States is a federal republic, which means that republic shares sovereignty between different levels of government. This system of government is opposed to a unitary republic like France. The Constitution of the United States of America is one of the oldest in the world which was accepted on the 17th of September in 1787, by the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia. It was applied in 1789 after declaring its independence in 1776. At the origin, the constitution was ratified by thirteen states whereas now there are fifty sovereign states. We examine the various methods by which the U.S federal government has maintained its superiority over the states and whether such a move has positive or negative outcomes.
