[...] And to what extent does it show its limitations? Thus, to answer this question, a first part will be dedicated to understanding Colette Feuillard's argumentation based on the theories of functional linguists and in a second time, we will evaluate if the syntactic function is finally well built alone. Understanding of Colette Feuillard's argumentation A. Of epistemological quarrels concerning the definition of the notion of syntax For Colette Feuillard, the notion of syntactic function is ambiguous, as it varies according to linguistic theories. [...] In fact, in this writing, after comparing what syntax is for the structuralist, functional, or generative approach, it does not appear to me that syntax is a regime that allows understanding the combinations of linguistic units in a given system. By looking at the notion of grammatical class, we have also been able to see that these units have a meaning within a given system. In this sense, they validate these different heuristics and a form of grammatical convergence of the systems, allowing us to assert that each of the notions has a unique intrinsic reality within these systems. [...] In the functional approach, on which Colette Feuillard, and which is based on a structuralist approach, relies in her text, syntax is a function of the grammatical class or semantics. This approach considers syntax as a study of the distribution of words, thus eluding the dependence of linguistic units on each other. Noam Chomasky, on the other hand, has criticized the structuralist approach and has provided an hypothético-deductive understanding of the grammatical sentence3. He created generative linguistics, whose object is to understand « the organization of knowledge acquisition allowing the speaker-listener to formulate an infinite set of phrases »4. [...]
