Abstract
This thesis explores Alphonse de Lamartine's travelogue, Voyage en Orient, analyzing its poetic and cultural significance within the context of Romantic literature and Orientalism.

[...] Voyage in the Orient, published in 1835, is a travelogue based on Lamartine's personal experience in the Near East, which he visited between 1832 and 1833. The text covers various territories, including Greece, Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, and Palestine. This journey takes place a few years after Alphonse de Lamartine's entry into politics, who had joined the July Monarchy in 1830, but failed to win a seat in parliament. It is then that he decides to travel from July 1832 to September 1833, he leaves from Marseille after chartering a boat with 19 crew members accompanied by his wife and daughter Julia - who will therefore die of pulmonary tuberculosis in Beirut in 1832-8.
