Former Portuguese colony annexed to Indonesia in 1976, East Timor did not acquire its independence until 2002 as a result of a peace process under the auspices of the UN. This annexation had never been recognized by the international community and the UN was able to organize a referendum on self-determination in 1999 which paved the way for independence.
