One of the central roles of a career counselor is to help clients to make a career choice. Identifying the determinants of a career choice is extremely useful as it provides the counselor with direction as to the different aspects to explore during the counseling sessions. For the purpose of this essay, the different factors that determine career choice have been grouped into five categories that are going to be examined successively. These are intellectual and physical ability, factors related to the client's personality, factors related to familial direct or indirect influence, societal factors and other factors. The factors mentioned above are largely interlinked and do not independently influence the client's choice of a career.
