The U.K. is one of the most important European countries located on an island west of the continent. Its particular location and history often encourages the concept that the U.K. can often be regarded as the American son of Europe. It is a unitary state composed of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland with a democratic system. It shares a land border with Ireland and is linked to Calais (France) by the Channel Tunnel.
With 62 million inhabitants, it is the sixth largest world economy and a great power with a strong economic, cultural and political influence. The British Empire used to be the largest in the world with many overseas territories and the U.K. still benefits from privileged relationships with Commonwealth members. That's why it has a long history of immigration from the four corners of the world: Africa, Asia, Europe, America.
The U.K. exerts worldwide influence with its national symbols known all around the world: the Queen, Big Ben, the Beatles, the University of Cambridge, the B.B.C. London was founded two millennia ago by the Romans as Londinium; it's now the capital and largest city of U.K. It is a truly global place which wields an influence on fashion, arts, finance, music, media and many more. London has several famous museums like British Museum, National Gallery, Tate Modern, and is also the most visited city in the world, before Paris, with many tourist attractive sites: Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square, Tower of London, along with the largest airport in Europe: Heathrow. London is well-known for its transport system: the iconic red double-decker buses, the black Cabs and the most extensive European underground network that transports three million people a day
