The adhesion of Turkey into the European Union is a current debate which inflames politicians and public opinion alike. The possible adhesion of Turkey into the Union is part of a wide enlargement process, which began since the construction of what we call today the European Union. However, in the case of Turkey there are several factors that prevent its integration into the EU. In this essay, we will try to understand the several debates highlighted by this demand of adhesion by Turkey and the contradictions in EU which surfaced with this case. We will also try to understand why the integration of Turkey into the European framework is taking so much time. What can explain the length process of its adhesion? Is the adhesion of Turkey a mere enlargement? Is the European cultural identity a barrier for Turkey to integrate into the Union?
