This document analyzes the evolution and divisions within the right-wing political spectrum in France since the 5th Republic, focusing on its engagement with the EU and internal conflicts.
[...] I.2 - The position regarding the European Union. The engagement in the EEC and then the EU, growing since the beginning of the 5th Republic, has been the main cause of division within the right, the markets, influential on the right, pushing for this integration, but the classic patriotism of the right developing strong 'sovereignist' tendencies (participating in the defeat of the Yes in the 2005 referendum, for example). This cleavage has been decisive, it even allowed the future P.R, Jacques Chirac, to differentiate himself from Giscardism in order to reconstitute a dominant neo-Gaullism, while organizing the liberal turn of the right, particularly during the cohabitation of 1986. [...] However, a part of the right opposes certain social evolutions presented as inescapable, particularly in matters of morals. A third way to characterize the right is that proposed by the tradition of the historical materialism, for which the political struggle is only the expression of the class struggle3. In this configuration, the 'right' is the political branch carrying interests in the space of the political, of a 'bourgeois bloc » (Gramsci), associating the different layers of the dominant class and supplementary classes associated with it or favoring their interest by feigning a rupture attitude with the system (the extreme right). [...] This encounter between a new sociology and a theme that becomes obsessive in public debate with global warming is a major factor in weakening right-wing parties in large agglomerations. [...]
[...] Right-wing parties have had to constantly accompany a movement that has seen religious practice collapse in France, while seeing their militant base still strongly attached to the Church and Catholic principles. Right-wing parties have thus been pushed into hesitations that are difficult to overcome during debates such as the legalization of abortion, proposed by a right-wing government, voted through thanks to the contributions of the opposition), or later the PACS or gay marriage. These hesitations are heard even within the National Front. [...]
[...] The right, linked to financial forces, had to undergo its own transformation. But with difficulty, the success of Emmanuel Macron, who aspired to part of the right, was based on a synthesis between a chaotic economic liberalism and progressivism in the field of morals (PMA, the leading role of Marlène Schiappa in the political device). II.3 - Emergence of a 'bohemian bourgeoisie', rise of the ecological challenge. La postmodernity sees the affirmation of environments with high incomes, very open in terms of morals, very cosmopolitan, but also frequently at the forefront in terms of ecology. [...]
