The American Civil War was a conflict between the Northern states and the Southern states. The war raged for four years (1861-65) and was marked by some of the bloodiest battles of modern history.
The economic situation was very different between the North and the South. There was an industrial revolution in the 1800's in the North, which turned to manufacturing. But in the South, the first activity was farming. Southern plantations (cotton, tobacco...) used African-American slaves to work and to profit of this free work. In the North, people began to regard slavery as wrong, and abolitionists, anti-slavery reformers, began to preach against of slavery. The South felt that their way of life was being threatened.
