The global wine industry is undergoing significant transformations in response to climate change and shifting consumer preferences, with investments in sustainable practices and new products.
[...] Finally, another trend lies in the development of organic wine, in order to meet the environmental demand from consumers. As a result, the wine industry is adopting sustainable practices (avoiding synthetic pesticides and herbicides, prioritizing soil health, biodiversity, recycling, renewable energies, and water conservation) in order to reduce its carbon footprint. [...] According to the data from the OIV (2024, p. global wine consumption decreased by 2.6% in 2023 compared to 2022 (see graph 1 in annex) and continues the downward trend observed since 2016 (except for 2021), particularly in China, as reflected in graph 2 in annex (nearly between 2023 and 2022). The EU is the world's largest market, with 107 million hectoliters, accounting for 48% of global consumption, a figure that decreased by 1.8% in 2023 compared to 2022. France is the second-largest wine-consuming country in the world, behind the United States, with a decrease of respectively -2.4% and in 2023 compared to 2022 (see table 1 in annex). [...]
[...] The OIV also reports a global growth of + 10% for white wine and + 17% for rosé over the period 2000-21. This trend is mainly driven by the growth of sparkling wines in the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom since 2010, offsetting the decline in sales in France or Spain. France remains the world leader for rosé wines, representing a third of global consumption. As for red wines, they are mainly consumed in the United States, China, and Germany. [...]
[...] Other projects focus on the study of genetic markers of grape varieties, which determine characteristics such as grape density or berry size, in order to optimize the selection of the most adapted individuals, while reducing the time and costs associated (Clémens, 2022). We can also note the VitiREV project (see schemes 1 and 2 in the annex), which benefits from a funding of 73.6 million euros over a period of 10 years (2020-2030). Led by the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, this program aims to support the transition to a pesticide-free viticulture and to promote an environmentally respectful model for the future of the sector (Viti, 2019).
