This synthesis article examines social segregation in the French educational system, its measurement, geographical disparities, temporal evolution, and consequences, highlighting the need for social mixity policies.
[...] By doing so, the correlation between the social profile of the establishment and academic performance is strongly attenuated, and even tends to cancel out. The attendance of more or less favored students seems to have a weak effect at the college level, even if another research, mobilizedusing a similar methodology in the first degree, finds significant effects in primary education (Davezies, 2005). One of the interpretations of the low correlation, at the college level, is thatthe social profile of the establishments and student results could be that of the support policies for the most disadvantaged establishments, which compensate for the difficulties encountered by these establishments. [...] Conversely, local policies taking into account the objective of social mix, including for example sectorization or the establishment of multi-high school sectors, can contribute to mitigating the effects of residential segregation. However, their effectiveness requires a precise diagnosis as well as strong local mobilization. Based on these findings, the research presented in this thesis provides tools for the development of such diagnostics. Such tools first involve defining a measure of segregation.
